Faith fills the fair

ENJOYING CREATION

Speaking at the Sunday worship service run by A Rocha UK and A Rocha International, Andy (pictured) said, ‘We’re to love what God has created as he loves it. And that love starts with enjoying creation – something birders know about – but continues through nurturing and protecting’.

Andy welcomed the fact that church leaders – from the Archbishop of Canterbury to Pope Francis – have recently emphasised how nature is important to God. Andy invited people to join A Rocha UK in seeking to restore and protect the nation’s once thriving nature.

Jointly organised by Leicestershire and Rutland Wildlife Trust and RSPB, the British Birdwatching Fair took place at Rutland Water nature reserve in August. The half-hour Sunday service is a popular feature, offering a unique opportunity to worship with conservationists from around the world.

A Rocha UK and A Rocha International have regularly organised the worship event. They’ve also worked together in creating a joint presence in the exhibition area, telling delegates about faith-based conservation work.

SIMPLE WORSHIP

The two organisations are among hundreds of exhibitors offering products and services at the fair, which encompasses the whole spectrum of the birdwatching industry while supporting global bird conservation. This year, A Rocha UK’s Eco Church programme was a particular draw – along with bird watching tours by A Rocha Portugal.

Held in the events marquee, the service was part of a wider programme of activities hosted by Birdfair regulars Chris Packham, Simon King, Mike Dilger, Nick Baker and more. ‘A simple act of worship – in the context of conservation of creation – has become the spiritual heart of Birdfair,’ said Andy. ‘It’s an honour to preach there.’
